The Development of a Competency Model and Training Needs Analysis for Funeral Directors

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop the competency model of the funeral director and to analyse the training needs. In order to do so, the potential competency model was devised through the collected data on the funeral director¡¯s competency from literature reviews and behavioral event interviews. Through expert review the potential competency model was finally modified. To verify whether the competency model is appropriate, the survey was held toward 53 funeral directors. The competency model of the funeral director was consisted in a total of 4 competency groups and 14 competencies and 42 behavioral indicators. As the result of the validity analysis on the competency groups, the competency and the behavioral indicators, it was confirmed to be valid. The 4 competency groups are job knowledge, job performance, communication, and building relationship. In these competency group it includes professional funeral work, religious procedures, solution on public health sanitation management, emotional control, response to customer¡¯s needs, persuasion and influence, developing sympathy, cooperation in communication, managing conflicts, and competencies such as establishing relationships with customers. As the result of each importance factor and possession degree as well as the training needs from the survey on the competency model of the funeral director, the difference was found in all competencies and behavioral indicators, thus the training need was confirmed. The results can be used for informing policy discussions and next steps with regards to the fields of human resource development, public health, and social welfare.
